St John the Baptist Parish Church
Diocese of Bacolod
Bago City, Negros Occidental
The Augustinian Recollects arrived to administer to administer Bago in 1882. Father Manuel Belloso was the first Recollect parish priest assigned in 1882 until 1883. He was succeeded by Fr. Ramon Alegria in 1883 and Fr. Vicente Abrego in 1884. Fr. Juan Bautista Pereda, parish priest from 1884 to 1889, started the construction of the bigger and stronger church in 1886.
Father Leon Ochoa was the last recollect missionary assigned in March to July 1898 and in October until December on the same year. The revolutionary army of Gen. Juan Araneta captured him along with other Recollect friars when the revolution broke out on November 5, 1898. The absence of the Recollect missionaries in Bago at the height of revolution favored the conversion of maby people to Aglipayan sect led by Fr. Gregorio Aglipay.
